APY NFL FOOTBALL POOL: WEEK 18 (FINAL WEEK!)

We have nearly reached the end of this NFL season and I’d like to give everyone a big thank you for joining and hanging in again this season. While there have been some turbulent events in and around the league (and elsewhere!) it’s been a pleasure to bring this pool to you again this year. Running this through a blog has been a learning curve but something I hope to expand in the next season.

All that aside, Week 18 promises to be an interesting week, in the sense that a vast majority of the matchups feature one team in the playoffs (or in the hunt) and another team that has little to play for. You can see the playoff scenarios on the blog (pinned for your convenience!) but they’ll also be sorted here by time and ranked by level of importance, ranked from the most important game (1) to the least important game (16). You probably don’t need to many guesses to figure out #1

Here is the schedule, with the write-up underneath

It should be noted that most of these games are fierce divisional rivalries and have inherent importance, so while they may have some added juice for that reason, that will play little into the importance factor. Also, ratings are based somewhat on other mitigating factors – for instance, the expectation is that the Colts will win comfortably, so the rating of the Steelers-Ravens reflects that. If the Jaguars can be competitive in their game, the significance of Steelers-Ravens shoots up significantly.

SATURDAY
Chiefs at Broncos, 4:30 pm ET
Importance: 8
The Chiefs need a win and a Titans loss for the 1 seed. A loss could put them as low as fourth.
The Broncos are out of the playoffs and have nothing to play for, aside from pride.
An interesting choice for ESPN but they likely didn’t have a lot of sway here. There weren’t a lot of big games that had limited implications elsewhere.

Cowboys at Eagles, 8:15 pm ET
Importance: 11
The Cowboys have locked up the division and the Packers have already locked up the bye. They may be motivated to win to get out of the four seed to avoid the Cardinals or Rams… but that is no certainty.
The Eagles have clinched a playoff spot, which will be either sixth or seventh in the NFC. Will they care which seed they get? I’m guessing no.
Two teams already in the playoffs may not be inclined to play their starters or play very close to the vest. Or maybe they’ll go all out.

SUNDAY
EARLY AFTERNOON GAMES
Steelers at Ravens, 1:00 pm ET
Importance: 10
Technically, both teams will go into this game with something to play for. The Colts-Jaguars game takes place at the same time and both teams will be hoping (but can’t really be expecting) the Jaguars to make that game competitive and the Steelers and Ravens will be going all out, at least until the Colts put the other game away.
The Steelers may have some added urgency as this will likely be Ben Roethlisberger’s last game.

Colts at Jaguars, 1:00 pm ET
Importance: 4
Since it was alluded to above, the Colts-Jaguars game has much in the way of knock on value to a number of the other games played this weekend, though that might not be apparent in the play in this one.
If the Colts do not win, they’ll need to rely on the Ravens, Raiders, and Dolphins to all come out victorious in their games to make the playoffs. But really, if they can’t beat the Jaguars in a must-win, are they really a team that deserves the playoffs?
The Jaguars secure the first overall pick in the NFL Draft with a loss and, while the players may be motivated to win or at least put together some positive tape, a lot of them haven’t been doing that to this point, so why expect it now?

Titans at Texans, 1:00 pm ET
Importance: 6
If the Titans win this game, they are guaranteed the first round bye and homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. If they lose, the Chiefs, Bengals, or Patriots could pass them. They’ll know what the Chiefs do before this game but will be expected to go full strength in this one regardless.
The Texans have played with fire at times to close out a lost season, and beat the Titans in Nashville in Week 11. They should be up for this one, so it should (hopefully) be entertaining at least.

Bengals at Browns, 1:00 pm ET
Importance: 12
The Bengals still have a shot at securing the first round bye in the AFC, though they’ll know the Chiefs result by now. If the Chiefs win, the Bengals have no shot at the bye and will be playing for seeding. As the 5-7 spots will be more or less interchangeable, this may not be a big game from their point of view. The importance factor varies wildly based on Chiefs-Broncos.
The Browns have been eliminated from the playoffs and just laid an egg against the Steelers. They may be up for this one though.

Packers at Lions, 1:00 pm ET
Importance: 14
The Packers have secured a first-round bye in the postseason, so many players should be expected to sit this one out.
The Lions have been competitive for much of the last half of the season, biting kneecaps and all, and should play their traditional rival hard, even if the Packers are undermanned. They would get the first overall pick with a loss and a Jags win but I find it hard to believe they’d play to lose. That said, this game is only for pride for both teams.

Bears at Vikings, 1:00 pm ET
Importance: 15
This may be the last game for the head coaches, Matt Nagy and Mike Zimmer. Will that carry any additional weight? No idea but this game could be a slog.

WFT at Giants, 1:00 pm ET
Importance: 16
Not wasting any more keystrokes than necessary on this one.

LATE AFTERNOON GAMES
Niners at Rams, 4:25 pm ET
Importance: 2
The second-most important game of the week pits a team needing the win to make it against a team looking to wrap up the division. Adding intrigue to this is that the Niners have won the last five games against the Rams.
This is a must-win game for the Niners. If they lose the Saints could pass them if they beat the Falcons, and while the Falcons may be up for the divisional showdown, it’s no certainty.
The Rams could really use this win to secure the division, vanquish the Niners finally, and potentially to get Cooper Kupp the 171 yards he needs to be the first receiver to crack 2000 yards (or just the 136 to pass Calvin Johnson’s 1964 yards).

Saints at Falcons, 4:25 pm ET
Importance: 3
The Saints need a win here and the Niners loss to make the postseason following a tumultuous season in which they lost their starting QB Jameis Winston to a torn ACL, and suffered through substandard play from the other THREE QB’s they’ve need to use.
The Falcons were officially eliminated last week and the week before they won their first game in their home stadium in a full calendar year. They will likely play hard against their division foes.

Seahawks at Cardinals, 4:25 pm ET
Importance: 5
This is a rare lost season for the Seahawks, who nevertheless just put up 51 points against the Lions last week. Will they be up for this one? Is this Pete Carroll’s last game in the Pacific Northwest? Is it the last for Russell Wilson?
The Cardinals need a win here and a Rams loss to take back the NFC West that they’ve led for almost the whole season. A win would certainly be good for playoff morale, especially after they beat the Cowboys in Dallas last week.

Patriots at Dolphins, 4:25 pm ET
Importance: 9
By this time, the Pats will know whether they can get the 1 seed, but if the Jets can do the improbable and beat the Bills in Orchard Park, the Patriots would win the division if they beat the Dolphins, which has been no easy feat in the Belichick era.
The Dolphins have nothing to play for as they’ve been eliminated. They could alter the AFC playoff race with a win, but will that be enough motivation? Motivation would likely come in the form of wanting to beat their division rivals to prevent another Pats AFC East division title.

Jets at Bills, 4:25 pm ET
Importance: 7
Much like the Colts-Jags or Titans-Texans, this game is important for the Bills, though they should have little trouble beating their division rival. A loss by Buffalo opens up the AFC East for the Patriots.
The Jets, as with the Texans and Lions, have been pesky in recent weeks and should be that way here.

Panthers at Buccaneers, 4:25 pm ET
Importance: 13
The Panthers are playing like a team running out the clock.
There are seeding implications for this game, but would expect that the Bucs will take a very cautious approach to playing their starters here, especially those like Mike Evans that are somewhat banged up right now.

SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
Chargers at Raiders, 8:20 pm ET
Importance: 1
There is little that needs to be said to drum up interest in this game. The Chargers and the Raiders are both 9-7, and a win means a postseason berth is assured for the winner. If the Colts win their game earlier on Sunday, it also means that the loser of this game will not make the playoffs (and will know by kickoff time).

APY NFL FOOTBALL POOL: WEEK 17 RESULTS

With much still up in the air heading into Week 17, the games brought a lot of clarity to an unpredictable season, with some unpredictable results:
Bengals 34, Chiefs 31: Justin Jefferson’s rookie record for receiving yards lasted one season. Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase have been one of football’s best pairings and proved it in Week 17 as Chase set an NFL record for the most receiving yards by a rookie in one game with a stunning 266 yards (and 3 TDs) in the win over the Chiefs. This game clinched the AFC North for the Bengals, after finishing 4-11-1 last season. Chase’s big day put him at 1429 receiving yards (4th in the NFL) and 13 TDs (2nd among all receivers) for the season and the Bengals still have a small chance of earning the first round bye by beating the Browns and having the Titans and Chiefs both lose in Week 18 **FULL SCENARIOS CAN BE FOUND HERE!**)
Raiders 23, Colts 20: The Raiders kept their season alive with a big road win at the (previously surging) Indianapolis Colts. Zay Jones had 8 catches for 120 yards, and Hunter Renfrow (not to be confused with new Brewers OF Hunter Renfroe) contributed 7 catches for 76 yards and TD, while Daniel Carlson kicked a game winning 33 yard field goal with no time left on the clock. With all of the turmoil surrounding the team (Gruden, Ruggs, a mini-QB controversy in some sectors of the Raiders media and fanbase), the team has worked through it all to have a shot at the postseason. The Raiders host the Chargers in a win-and-in game this Sunday night.
Buccaneers 28, Jets 24: OK, so the result wasn’t unpredictable (though the Bucs needing to come back from a fourth-quarter 10 point deficit was), the sight of WR Antonio Brown stripping off his pads and walking off the field in the third quarter was… well, if it was anyone other than Antonio Brown. Regardless of the circumstances, it was a very odd situation and may be difficult for Brown to recover from (thirty strikes and you’re out perhaps?)

APY NFL FOOTBALL POOL RECAP
While the results may have seemed unpredictable at times, our top scorer of the week, Salvo, saw everything ahead of time and was just one game away from a perfect week. His 19 points week, only missing the Monday nighter, set him apart from the pack as Salvo made much ground and pushed himself into the top four, now in a tie for second place, with 207 points.

In the standings, Jerome remains the leader at 210 points, holding a three point lead over Salvo, Donna P, and Will with just one week to go. Paul is just outside the top four with 206 points, while Jason G is one point further back at 205.

MINI POOLS
The mini-pools have encountered somewhat interesting results, as the top two spots in each of the pools are occupied by people already in the top 4. Of course, as per the rules of the pool, you may only win one prize, so that means each of the prizes would be occupied by the third place finishers in each mini-pool, though there is still time to change the results in the final week

Mini-Pool A
Molly finds herself in first place in MPA with 69 points, one point ahead of Paul, Denzil, and Adam. Marcus and the Predictor are just two points off the top with 67 points each. This will be a close finish. Jerome has 70 points but is poised to take home the first prize instead, while Salvo is now in second place both the main pool and this mini-pool.

Mini-Pool B
Marcel & Aiden and Steve are in first place in MPB with 69 points, followed closely by Baldip at 68 and Jason G at 67.
Donna P has been the highest-scoring competitor in the last five weeks, with 73 points (or a 14.6 weekly point average). Since she is in second place in the main pool, she would take that prize instead. She is the most likely entrant to have the mini-pool to fall back on in the event of slippage, as those in the non-money spots are at least four points behind her.

PRIZES:
Just to jog everyone’s memory into the final week of the season, the prizes set to be awarded are as follows:
FIRST PLACE: $600
SECOND PLACE: $150
THIRD PLACE: $70
FOURTH PLACE: $20
MINI-POOL A WINNER: $20
MINI-POOL B WINNER: $20

As a reminder, in the event of a tie, winnings will be shared amongst those in the tie – there will be no tiebreakers. Currently, we have three competitors tied for second, if that continues, they will split the second, third, and fourth place prizes evenly ($150+$70+$20 = $240 / 3 = $80 apiece). You cannot win one of the first through fourth prizes AND a mini-pool prize, so if a top score in a mini-pool is also a first through fourth place finisher, that prize will transfer to the next person down the line in the subject mini-pool without exception.

APY NFL PLAYOFF PICTURE: WEEK 18

I will be updating this post throughout the day with the changes to the playoff picture – the options that are no longer possible will be struck through.
This page was updated after the Saturday games – Bengals and Patriots no longer have a shot at the #1 overall seed in the AFC.
This page was further updated after the early Sunday games. The Colts are out after a shocking loss to the Jaguars and the Ravens are out following their OT loss to the Steelers. After having a 5% chance of making the playoffs before the day started, the Steelers are now up to a 99% chance – the only way they miss is if the Chargers-Raiders game finishes in a tie. Meanwhile, the Titans locked up the 1 seed and the Chiefs will be second in the AFC.
After a fittingly wild Sunday night game between the Chargers and Raiders, the season is now over. Congratulations to the fourteen teams that made the playoffs, including the Raiders, following their OT win… and the Steelers, who clinched a playoff spot after the Chargers and Raiders failed to tie!

We are now 16 games away from the end of the NFL season, and in the past week, much has been done to put the playoff picture into focus. The Packers have clinched homefield advantage throughout the NFC playoffs, while the top of the AFC is still wide open. In the final playoff spots, we have a true win-and-you’re-in game between the Chargers and Raiders next Sunday night, while the Colts, Niners, Saints, and even the Steelers and Ravens still have playoff aspirations. The information below spells out playoff and seeding possibilities, as well as the times for each game of relevance next weekend.

There are two divisions yet to be decided, the AFC East and the NFC West. Buffalo clinches a division win if they can beat the Jets at home or if the Pats lose in Miami. The Rams can win the NFC West with a win over the Niners, or an Arizona home loss to Seattle. The Rams have lost their last five games against the Niners, and the Niners need the win to claim a wild card spot, so a win is far from a sure thing.

The statuses of the remaining teams – Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Chargers, Las Vegas Raiders, San Francisco 49ers, New Orleans Saints, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Baltimore Ravens – are all yet to be fully decided, but can be summarized thusly:
Chargers at Raiders is a play-in game
Colts are in if they beat Jacksonville
Niners are in if they beat the Rams.
Saints need to beat the Falcons and have the Niners lose to the Rams
Steelers need a win and a Colts loss (and for the Chargers and Raiders not to tie)
Ravens need a miracle

AFC
Five teams are still mathematically vying for two playoff spots in the AFC, though if the Steelers lose to the Browns on MNF, the Steelers AND the Ravens both kiss their extremely faint wild card hopes goodbye. The Bills win the AFC East with a victory over the Jets, or a Patriots loss to the Dolphins. The Titans, Chiefs, Bengals and Patriots all have a shot at the 1 seed

1. TENNESSEE TITANS (12-5)LOCKED IN

The Colts are OUT after a shocking loss to Jacksonville.

BALTIMORE RAVENS (8-9)the Ravens are OUT of postseason contention
The Ravens lost to the Steelers and their playoff hopes have extinguished.

NFC
The NFC’s playoff race involves just two teams, the 9-7 Niners and the 8-8 Saints. If the Niners can’t beat the Rams, the Saints make the playoffs if they beat the Falcons. Also, with the Packers win on Sunday night, they’ve also tied up the 1 seed. The West is the only division yet to be decided – the Rams clinch with a win over the Niners or a loss by Arizona.

1. GREEN BAY PACKERS (13-4)
Clinched NFC North division title
Clinched homefield advantage throughout the playoffs
The Packers lost to the Lions in a game that meant nothing to them.

2. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (13-4)

Clinched NFC West
With the Cardinals loss to Seattle, the Rams backed into the division title. With their loss to San Francisco, the Rams dropped to fourth and will take on their division rivals Arizona in the first ever playoff game played on a Monday night.

5. ARIZONA CARDINALS (11-5)
Remaining game: vs Seattle
Clinched playoff berth
The Cardinals will travel to LA to take on the Rams in the wildcard round on Monday night.

6. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (10-7)
The Niners took the six seed with their overtime win over the Rams. They will face the Cowboys in Dallas on Sunday afternoon (technically Arlington, but you get the point)

7. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (9-8)
Clinched playoff berth
The Eagles travel to Tampa to take on the defending Super Bowl champs on Sunday afternoon.

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (9-8) – OUT
Despite finishing the season on a winning note, the Saints missed the playoffs after the Niners beat the Rams to secure the last playoff spot
